Where is your practice and how did you start?
Hi, this is Dr. Jason Dulac coming to you from my office, Dulac Dental of Springfield in Springfield, Virginia. We're a family practice located just outside the Beltway in the heart of Springfield. I started out doing dentistry in the Navy and, following getting out of the Navy, you know, mostly working on a lot of young recruits, I really enjoyed the more family aspects—getting to know the family, the kids, seeing the kids grow up, seeing them go through college and high school. We have a great group of older patients as well from one of the local retirement communities called Greenspring.
What do you like about doing family dentistry?
I like doing all types of dentistry. There's not really much of dentistry I don't like, that's why we offer all the services for our patients. We do fillings, crowns, root canals, cosmetic work, Invisalign, veneers. I do surgery, we do implants, third molar extractions, we do dentures, we do partials, we do bridges, we do crowns. So we do pretty much everything. And one cool thing about our office is we have a same-day crown machine, so you can get the same high-quality material you get from the lab at my office in one visit without a temporary—without going home with a temporary, without worrying about a temporary coming off. Same quality crown at my office in the lab in one visit, just takes about 45 minutes of downtime to make the crown.
What would you say to someone who is scared of going to the dentist?
Most of our patients are afraid of coming to the dentist. It's one of the most common fears in the United States; I think it's definitely in the top five, and what I remember is death ranks below it. So, pretty much no one likes coming to the dentist. We have a lot of good things to help make you comfortable. If you want to just come in, meet the team in the office, and just walk around before your first visit, you're welcome to do that. We have blankets, pillows, weighted blankets, headphones, and earplugs, so I encourage all that to make you more comfortable. We've got stress balls, so all that stuff helps. We can also do Valium or Xanax if you need a little something to take the edge off, or if you want something that's safe to drive home afterwards, we do have laughing gas in the office. You breathe it in and out, it's totally flushed out of your system after you leave the office. It doesn't interfere with any medications, so you definitely shouldn't feel concerned about coming to the office. The sooner you get started and the sooner you come back, the easier it's gonna be. We see patients that we haven't seen since COVID routinely still. I have a lot of patients who haven't been to the dentist in years. That's what we're here for. The harder the case is, the more enjoyable it is for me to fix it. So please come in, feel comfortable, feel comfortably telling you telling me about what you'd like to do, feel comfortable me about telling me what you're not looking for, and I'll work with you to get your mouth healthy again.
How would you help bring in family members who avoid the dentist?
We love direct referrals. Direct referrals are, in my opinion, the best type of patient in the office. So we'd like to see your friends, families, co-workers. I have patients that talk to their co-workers about the fact that they got a same-day crown, they didn't have a temporary, and their coworkers say, "Oh, that sounds enjoyable." You know, please have them come to the office, please have them call the office. If you're not comfortable talking to them about coming to the office, but you are comfortable giving us their phone number or texting them, "Hey, can I give this office your phone number? They've been really helpful for me. I think they can help you too." That way, we can reach out to them. We can do a three-way call right there with you at the office if that works for you. But anything we can do to help you get your friends and family in the community healthier is something that we're interested in doing.
What is your "claim to fame" as a community dentist?
In addition to the same-day crowns, one thing that a lot of patients really like about coming to my office is that I do everything. So if we're in the middle of a procedure and a tooth needs a root canal, we do the root canal. We don't send you to another office. You don't have to worry about pain, you still get your crown done. It adds a little time to the appointment; I love to stay on time, I'm almost always on time. But if we're in the middle of a procedure and it needs a root canal, it needs a root canal. So if you have time to get it done, we'll get it done. You don't have to go somewhere else for orthodontics. I do orthodontics for functional orthodontics for younger family members, ages six to eight. We do adult orthodontics. A lot of my patients who have done Invisalign are in their 50s and 60s, you know, after they've taken care of their kids, their kids are out of college. They can focus on themselves again; they like to get some Invisalign done. But I enjoy being able to provide all the services in our office and not have to refer everyone to a specialist. We do have great specialists in the area. We're fortunate to be in an area with a lot of great specialists. If I truly feel your care would be better at a specialist, I will let you know. But I enjoy being able to do everything at the office for my patients.
How do you handle patients who are terrified of the dentist?
Yeah, so my new patient coordinator is Liz, so you could speak with Liz. And like I said, anything that would help make you more comfortable in the office, we're happy to do. If you want to just come to the office once to do your paperwork and just walk around and meet people at the office before you come to see me, we can do that. If you'd rather start with me and a consultation exam without doing anything else, we can do that. If you feel more comfortable starting with the hygienist and your cleaning, we can do that. But we want to get you in the office and get the process started however that makes you most comfortable to do so. We are happy to work with you on that.
What is the easiest way to make an appointment?
The easiest way to make an appointment at the office is to call us at 703-451-4500. We also have a website, DulacDDS.com. Through the website, you can find our email; it's Dr. Jason Dulac at DulacDDS.com. You can email us, call us. One really cool thing is everyone likes to text now. Our main number, that same phone number, is 703-451-4500. We get texts at that number as well, so you can text us at that number, or you can call us during office hours and speak to the staff.
